(OLNEY)  A surface trough will move across Northern Illinois today, followed by a shortwave over Central Illinois by late this afternoon, bringing us in the downstate area another shot of Arctic air with our coldest temperatures so far this fall – another disturbance could bring us some light snow Saturday morning, but dry for the rest of the weekend – maybe a slight warm up by next Monday – stay tuned for weather updates.


(NEWTON)  In state news – with the holiday season in full swing, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and local EMA’s are offering safety tips – IEMA is urging folks to buy gifts that can help family and friends stay safe during all types of emergencies – such preparedness and safety gifts includes NOAA weather alert radios, flashlights, first aid kits, home emergency preparedness kits, vehicle preparedness kits, and/or smoke alarms & carbon monoxide detectors – for more, logon on at  www.Ready.Illinois.gov.


(OLNEY)  Illinois experienced wide temperature swings in November – in fact, by month’s end, November was slightly cooler than average in Illinois – the statewide average temperature for November was 41.7 degrees, nearly 1 degree (0.8) below normal – the statewide average precipitation was 2.13 inches, which was 1.34 inches below normal – for the traditional fall months of September thru November, the state’s average temperature was 56.2 degrees, almost 2 (1.8) degrees above normal and the 15th warmest fall on record in Illinois – all the data and numbers provided by the Illinois State Water Survey in Champaign.


(NEWTON)  The investigation continues into a two vehicle traffic crash that occurred at 5:17 late Monday afternoon on State Route 128, at the intersection of a Fayette County road, about one mile south of Beecher City – the State Police report that 19 year old Malayne L. Seaton of Herrick was southbound on Route 128 when she failed to reduce speed and struck the rear of a farm implement, also southbound on Route 128 – Seaton was transported to St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham – the tractor driver, 34 year old David Rodger Abendroth of St. Elmo was not injured – no tickets have been issued so far.


(OLNEY)  The investigation continues into a single car crash that occurred at 6:00 early yesterday morning (Tuesday) on the Illinois Route 161 Extension, six miles south of Iuka, in Marion County – the State Police report 78 year old Ronald W. Stuber of Iuka was eastbound on Route 161, one mile west of the Iuka Road, when the car struck a horse in the roadway – a passenger in the car, 51 year old Jeffrey W. Stuber of Iuka, was pronounced dead at the scene – the elder driver was transported to Salem Township Hospital – no tickets have been issued – emergency personnel from Marion County assisted the State Police at the scene.


(NEWTON/OLNEY)  The leaf collections are continuing in Newton and Olney  :  the City of Newton has extended  the leaf pick up to December 14th, a week from tomorrow – the leaves must be on the roadside of the ditch near the street or at the edge of the street – only leaves will be vacuumed, no twigs & no tree limbs – Newton residents can call  783-8511  and leave a message with address and phone number to have their leaves vacuumed  :  the City of Olney will continue leaf pick up for at least another week – the loose leaf piles which should be placed as close to the roadway as possible, but not in ditches and not in the streets – for those bagging leaves, notify the Olney City Hall when bags are placed by the street and ready for pick up – plus Olney’s brush dump is open from 10:00 to 4:00 on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

(OLNEY)  The Richland County Firefighters will conduct their annual door-to-door Food Drive tomorrow evening, picking up non-perishable food items in the communitieis of Calhoun, Parkersburg, and Dundas, beginning at 6:00 – those who’d like to help out are asked to place their food items in a bag and place those bags on their front porch with the porch light turned on – non-perishable food items can also be dropped off at several locations such as the Fire Department in Olney, the TNT Stop in Claremont, at Noble Foods, and at the Wakefield Mill – all food collected will be distributed to those in need in Richland County.


(NEWTON)  The Jasper County Board of Review has started its duties for the 2017 assessment year – all complaints must be filed or postmarked on or before December 22nd, 2017, in the Jasper County Office Building, at 204 West Washington Street, in Newton – office hours are mornings from 9:00 to 12:00 noon, Monday thru Friday – afternoons by appointment only – call the Assessment Office at  618-783-8042.


(NEWTON)  The American Legion Jasper Post #20 in Newton will have Santa Claus available for area children this Sunday afternoon from 2:00 until 4:00 – not only will the jolly ole fellow visit with children, but he’ll also be handing out treat bags as well – plus there will be plenty of cookies and hot cocoa available  :  the American Legion in Newton will also be hosting its monthly pork loin dinner tomorrow night, with serving to start at 6:00 – the public is invited  :  that’s at the American Legion Jasper Post #20 in Newton.


(NEWTON/OLNEY)  All area blood donors are encouraged to get out and give blood at their next chance – here’s the list of all upcoming regional blood drives  :  today at the Patoka High School from 1:00 to 5:00  :  also today at the Effingham Elks Club from 2:00 to 6:00  :  tomorrow at the Blood Donation Center in Effingham from 12:15 to 6:45  ::  all blood types and platelets are needed to help replenish low supplies.


(OLNEY)  The RMH Foundation’s Holiday Tour of Homes is set for this coming Sunday afternoon with the homes open for visitors from 1:00 to 4:00 – participating homes include Jared & Melissa Baughman on Red Oak Lane, Matt & Rachel Miller on Coyote Crossing, Jim Burnett & Karen Jameson on Butler Street, Bryan Smithenry on North Fair, and the Laurel 201 Private Guest House of James & Brianne White – the Heritage House Museum and McsBurg School, both at the corner of Kitchell & Elm, will also be open for tours with entertainment & refreshments, free of charge – the $10 Tour of Homes tickets and raffle tickets are available for purchase at all area banks, plus the Chamber of Commerce and the RMH Foundation Office – raffle prizes are a jewelry tree, which includes a pair of princess cut diamond earrings, plus four decorated gingerbread houses – both tour and raffle tickets may be purchased on the day of the event at any of the House Tour locations – for tickets or details, call the RMH Foundation Office at  618-395-6088.


    The Olney Central College Music Department will have a Holiday Concert this Saturday night in the Dr. John D. Stull Performing Arts Center, beginning at 7:00 – the Richland County High School Concert Choir will also take part – admission is free and all ages are invited to attend this Saturday night at OCC

    The St. Joseph Church in Stringtown will host a fundraising “Pasta Dinner” this Friday night from 4:30 to 8:00 to benefit Brenda Kocher, all by donations at the door – carry-outs available – plus a silent auction, 50/50 drawing, and bring your gifts for wrapping for a donation – to donate an auction item, call  843-5278

    A reminder that tomorrow is the “one day only” pick up date for the pre-ordered poinsettias sold by the Carle Richland Memorial Hospital Auxiliary – that’s from 8:00am until 6:00pm at the Hospital’s Ambulance Building – those picking up the plants can park in the lot just north of the Ambulance Building
